Subwoofer box for a Toyota FJ Cruiser
The FJ Cruiser is a short, boxy off-roader with half-size rear doors and a cargo area that opens straight into the cabin. The box goes behind the rear seat, and the small cabin helps it sound big.
Where the sub goes
- Cargo area, against the rear seat. The usual spot: a rectangular box or a wedge that follows the seat back angle, so the rear seat can stay upright.
- Side panels. Room for a slim box shaped to the panel — less volume, but the cargo floor stays free.
- Factory sub. Some FJs had an upgraded audio package with a subwoofer in the cargo area. An aftermarket box usually replaces it.

Example: a box behind the rear seat
Say the space is 36″ wide, 14″ deep and 15″ high. With ¾″ walls the inside is 34.5 × 12.5 × 13.5″ — about 3.4 ft³ gross: enough for a single 12″ ported box (1.5–2.5 ft³ net plus the port) or two 10″ sealed. The size is an example — measure your own FJ.
Cabin gain
The FJ cabin is short, so it lifts the bass from a fairly high frequency: a sealed box sounds deep, and a ported box tuned low gets help below its tuning. Off-road trips mean dust and water, so seal the box and keep it off the floor.
