Subwoofer box for a Jeep Wrangler or Gladiator

Updated October 14, 2026 · 4 min read · ENPTESRU

A Jeep Wrangler is a small SUV with a removable top, removable doors and a floor you can hose out. A sub box for it has to fit the cargo area, still leave room for gear, survive water and sound right with the top on or off.

Where the sub goes

  • 4-door Wrangler Unlimited (JL, JK). The cargo area behind the rear seat is the usual spot: a box against the seat back, or a wedge that follows its angle. There is room for a 12″ ported box or two 10″ subs in a sealed box, and the rear seat still folds.
  • 2-door Wrangler. The cargo area is shallow. A wedge box with a shallow 8″ or 10″ against the rear seat, or a box under or behind the seat, keeps some cargo space.
  • TJ and YJ. Even less room: compact sealed boxes behind the rear seat, or custom boxes shaped to the wheel wells.
  • Gladiator (JT). A crew-cab pickup: the sub goes under the rear seat, which flips up over a storage area, in a long, low box. See also crew cab sub boxes.

Some Wrangler trims come with a factory subwoofer as part of the premium audio package; an aftermarket box usually replaces it or goes next to it. Aftermarket brands also sell enclosures shaped for specific Jeep models — if one fits yours, it is the quickest option.

Example: a box behind the rear seat

Say the space behind the rear seat of a 4-door is 34″ wide, 14″ deep and 15″ high. With ¾″ walls the inside is 32.5 × 12.5 × 13.5″ — about 3.2 ft³ gross. That is enough for a single 12″ ported box (after the port and the sub are subtracted) or two 10″ subs sealed. If the seat back leans into the space, use a wedge: the calculator fits an angled box to the top and bottom depth you measure.

Top on, soft top, top off

With a hard top and the doors on, a Wrangler behaves like a small SUV: the cabin lifts the deep bass, and a modest box sounds big. A soft top leaks, so the effect is weaker; with the top and doors off, it is almost gone, and the same sub sounds thin below 50 Hz. If you drive topless a lot, plan for more box volume, more cone area or a ported box.

In the calculator choose “SUV / minivan”, the placement “In a cargo area open to the cabin”, and the cabin sealing that matches your top — “Leaky (soft top…)” or “Top down or windows open” — to see how much bass you lose.

Water, dust and mounting

  • Rain gets in with the top off and many owners wash the floor out. Seal MDF with resin or paint, use marine carpet or vinyl, and stand the box on rubber feet so it does not sit in water.
  • A marine-rated sub and a grille survive mud, sand and cargo much better.
  • Bolt the box to the cargo tie-downs or a bracket. Straps alone loosen off-road, and a loose box is dangerous in a rollover.

Design it for your Jeep

Enter the measured space and the wedge angle, pick your sub from the database, choose sealed or ported, and the calculator shows the response with your top setting, draws the box and gives you the cut list and DXF. For a ported box, the port calculator gives the port length on its own.

FAQ

What size sub box fits in a Jeep Wrangler?

In a 4-door Wrangler Unlimited the cargo area behind the rear seat takes a 12″ ported box or two 10″ in a sealed box without losing all the cargo space. In a 2-door the cargo area is small, so most builds use a shallow 8″ or 10″ in a wedge box against the rear seat. Measure your Jeep: the space differs between generations and with the seat folded or up.

Sealed or ported for a Jeep?

With the top on, a 4-door has room for a ported box and the cabin helps the low bass. With a soft top or the top off, the cabin gain mostly disappears, so a ported box or more cone area makes up for it. In a 2-door with little space, sealed is the practical choice.

Where does the sub go in a Jeep Gladiator?

Usually under the rear seat — the seat cushion flips up over a storage area — in a long, low box with one or two shallow 10″ subs. Behind the rear seat there is almost no room.

How do I protect a sub box in a Jeep from water?

Rain gets in with the top or doors off, and many owners wash the floor out. Seal MDF with resin or paint, cover it with marine carpet or vinyl, keep the box off the floor on rubber feet, and consider a marine-rated sub.
