Subwoofer box for a Ford Mustang
In a Mustang the box goes in the trunk. The trunk is a separate space behind the seats, so the bass has to get through the seat backs — box size, which way the sub fires and the trunk opening all matter.
Where the sub goes
- Coupe (fastback). The trunk takes a 12″ ported or one or two 10″–12″ sealed. The opening is the limit — measure it.
- Convertible. The trunk is shallower and the top needs room when it folds; a shallow 10″ sealed or a slim box is typical.
- Fox body hatchback. The cargo area is open to the cabin, so the box gets more cabin gain.
- Factory Shaker system. It already has a trunk sub; an aftermarket box usually replaces it.

Example: a trunk box
Crutchfield gives the room for a box in a 2015–2023 coupe trunk as about 39″ wide and 15″ high, and owners measure the trunk opening at only about 12″ front to back; a ready-made dual-12″ box for this car is 12″ deep and 15¼″ high. Take a box 39″ wide, 12″ deep and 15″ high. With ¾″ walls the inside is 37.5 × 10.5 × 13.5″ — about 3.1 ft³ gross: a 12″ ported (1.5–2.5 ft³ net plus the port) or two 10″–12″ sealed. The 2024+ car has a different trunk — measure it and its opening.
Bass through the trunk
A closed trunk loses some bass on its way into the cabin, mostly above 50–60 Hz, while the cabin lifts the lowest notes. Opening the rear seat pass-through, if your car has one, helps. Where does a subwoofer go in a Ford Mustang?

How big a box fits through the Mustang trunk opening?
The opening is smaller than the trunk. Measure its width, height and the diagonal, and check that the box goes through before you build — or build it inside.
Does the Mustang have a factory sub?
Cars with the premium Shaker system have a subwoofer in the trunk. An aftermarket box can replace it or play alongside it with an adapter.
