Subwoofer box for a Polaris RZR or Ranger

Updated October 16, 2026 · 2 min read · ENPTESRU

A UTV is open, wet and shakes hard. A sub box for a Polaris RZR or Ranger has to be compact, sealed against water and dust and bolted down — and it has to play without help from a cabin.

Where the sub goes

  • Ranger. Under the bench or seats where there is storage, or behind the seats; a long, low sealed box with one or two shallow subs.
  • RZR. Behind the seats or in a pod on the cage or under the dash; space is tight, so 8″ and shallow 10″ subs are common.
  • General. Similar to a RZR: behind the seats or under the dash.

The same ideas apply to other side-by-sides — see the Can-Am guide.

Pick a sub for this spaceThe calculator opens with the vehicle and the space from this guide and lists the subs that fit there, each with its box. Then adjust the size to your own vehicle.

Example: a box under the seat

Say the space is 20″ wide, 12″ deep and 9″ high. With ¾″ walls the inside is 18.5 × 10.5 × 7.5″ — about 0.8 ft³ gross: enough for an 8″ sealed (0.3–0.5 ft³) or a shallow 10″ at the small end of its range.

No cabin gain

In an open UTV there is nothing to lift the deep bass. The buttons in “Pick a sub for this space” above open the calculator with this already set: the vehicle, where the box goes and the size of the space.

Power, water, vibration

  • Check the charging system output before choosing an amp; a second battery helps for long sessions.
  • Coat the wood, use marine-rated parts, seal the connections.
  • Bolt the box to the frame or cage with rubber washers.

Design it for your UTV

Enter the measured space, pick a shallow sub and compare sealed and ported without cabin gain; the calculator draws the box and gives the cut list and DXF.

FAQ

Where does a subwoofer go in a Polaris RZR or Ranger?

Under or behind the seats, in a compact, sealed, waterproofed box. Many Rangers have storage under the seats; in a RZR the space behind the seats or a pod is common. Measure your machine — models and years differ.

Why does a sub sound weaker in a UTV than in a car?

An open UTV has no cabin to lift the deep bass. The same sub plays several dB lower below 50 Hz than in a closed car, so plan more cone area or a ported box if there is room.

Can the UTV’s charging system run a big amp?

Check it first: UTV charging systems put out much less current than a car alternator. Size the amp to it, or add a second battery or a higher-output charging setup.

How do I keep the box alive in mud and water?

Seal or coat the wood, use a marine-rated sub and grille, stand the box on rubber feet and keep connections sealed.
