Subwoofer box for a golf cart

Updated October 16, 2026 · 2 min read · ENPTESRU

A golf cart is open, small and often runs on a 36V or 48V battery pack. A sub box for it has to be compact, weatherproof and powered correctly — and it plays without help from a cabin.

Where the sub goes

  • Rear flip seat. Under or inside the rear seat kit there is room for a compact sealed box.
  • Under the dash. A small pod with an 8″ or shallow 10″.
  • Roof console. Overhead sound bars and consoles can take small subs.
  • Under the front seat. On electric carts this is usually the battery compartment — keep the box out of it.

The same ideas apply to UTVs — see the Polaris guide.

Pick a sub for this spaceThe calculator opens with the vehicle and the space from this guide and lists the subs that fit there, each with its box. Then adjust the size to your own vehicle.

Example: under the rear seat

A ready-made sub box that replaces the storage bin under the back seat of a Club Car Precedent measures 24″ wide, 16″ deep and 12″ high. With ¾″ walls the inside is 22.5 × 14.5 × 10.5″ — about 2.0 ft³ gross: a 10″ ported (0.75–1.25 ft³ net plus the port) or a 12″ sealed (0.75–1.5 ft³). Other carts differ, and on electric carts the space under the front seat holds the batteries — measure yours.

No cabin gain

In an open cart nothing lifts the deep bass, so the same sub sounds weaker below 50 Hz than in a car. The buttons in “Pick a sub for this space” above open the calculator with this already set: the vehicle, where the box goes and the size of the space.

Power and weather

  • Use a 48V/36V-to-12V reducer sized for the amp, or a separate 12V battery.
  • Seal the wood, use a marine-rated sub and grille, and keep connections dry.

Design it for your cart

Enter the space, pick a sub and compare sealed and ported without cabin gain; the calculator draws the box and gives you the cut list and DXF.

FAQ

Where does a subwoofer go in a golf cart?

Under or in the rear flip seat, in a pod under the dash, or in a roof console. On an electric cart the batteries are usually under the front seat, so that space is taken.

How do I power an amp in a 36V or 48V cart?

Use a voltage reducer (48V or 36V to 12V) rated for the amp’s current, or a separate 12V battery. Do not tap 12V from a few of the cart batteries — it drains them unevenly.

Why does a sub sound weak in a golf cart?

A golf cart is open, so there is no cabin to lift the deep bass. Plan a ported box or more cone area, and do not expect car-like bass from a small sealed box.
